Providing water services throughout the Severn Trent region
Working as part of Severn Trent Services, all our employees get two days per year to go out and give back to our local communities.
Recently, some of our Commercial Water Services team, who operate and maintain thousands of assets that provide water and wastewater services across the UK, teamed up with Bromford Housing to support a local in need of a garden refresh.
Reed beds are natural filtration systems crucial for conserving water quality. However, like any other wastewater asset, they must be regularly looked after to do their job correctly.
Unfortunately, reed beds are often neglected until a problem occurs, such as a pollution incident.
Alastair Pentland, Environmental Operations Manager at Oren Environmental, has outlined the seven reasons why routine reed bed maintenance is essential.

The reed bed – both measure 9m x 29m – and form part of a sewage treatment works.
Our client is a county council in the UK.
The location is a woodland park with a canal. An area of natural beauty, the site was once home to a colliery that opened in the mid-nineteenth century. Today it’s a popular spot for hikers, dog walkers, joggers, cyclists, and picnickers.
The reed bed is part of an unmaintained treatment scheme built in the nineties. Once cleaned, the abandoned mine water from the former colliery is used to fill the canal to maintain its level.
The Betterment Programme, run by Operations Manager Charlie Anderson, sees three areas of Severn Trent Services come together to increase our service offering to our customers.
It involves Oren Environmental, which is expanding its team to offer grounds maintenance services for our Ministry of Defence contract managed by our Water Services Contracts team. They’ll also deliver asset condition grading services – on the buildings and civil engineering side – to assist our Central Support Services team.
