Taking care of nature-based solutions to managing water.
Oren Environmental is part of Severn Trent, one of Britain’s largest water companies. We specialise in nature-based solutions to managing water, like reed beds and sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), for organisations nationwide.
We’re the caretakers of over 355,000m2 of reed beds across the UK, making us industry leaders in reed bed maintenance and refurbishment, as well as large-scale desludging of settlement lagoons.
Our speciality is maintaining reed beds so they can treat water effectively over a more extended period, avoiding water quality issues and costly, disruptive reed bed refurbishments.
- Optimal functioning water assets
- Longer-lasting water assets
- Water quality improvements
- Reduced pollution incidents
- Flood mitigation
- Healthy ecosystems

Our leadership team consists of talented individuals deeply committed to preserving and enhancing natural ecosystems through the sustainable management of reed beds.
With a wealth of experience and a diverse range of skills, each member brings a unique perspective and invaluable knowledge to all our projects.
The word ‘Oren’ means ‘Orange’ in Welsh. Orange is the colour of mine water when it’s oxygenated before it’s treated, cleaned, and released safely into waterways. When we remove iron oxide, it dries to what’s commonly known as Ochre – a bright orange powder. That’s why we think our name perfectly represents our roots and our work today.
Working on 76 mine water treatment schemes across the UK on behalf of the Coal Authority, we help to prevent thousands of tonnes of iron from entering watercourses and damaging the environment.
Our work contributes to the 122 billion litres of water treated each year. This helps to protect the environment—including around 350km of rivers—from the polluted water that comes from disused coal and metal mines.*
Nature-based solutions like reed beds are crucial in the treatment of mine water. By helping to manage the largest portfolio of single-owned reed beds in Europe, covering an area of over 355,000 square metres, we use this experience to benefit you and your organisation.
