At Aqualytix, we believe in the power of mentorship to shape the future. On National Mentoring Day, we take a moment to celebrate the invaluable relationships that guide and inspire our team members. Our commitment to mentoring underlines our goal to ‘Create and invest in a diverse and talented workforce’, which is one of the five pillars of our sustainability plan. Today we’ve had the pleasure of speaking to Layla, one of our current apprentices who has shared her mentoring experience with us.
1. Hi Layla, firstly, tell us a little about where you work and what you do.
I work as a sales assistant apprentice in Aqualytix, in terms of what I do I have specific day to day tasks which range from updating various spreadsheets the business use, draft quotes and contract renewals for the BDMs, along with my set tasks I also support other areas of the business in whatever way they may need.
2. How did you come about getting your apprenticeship with Aqualytix?
When I was at college, I knew I didn’t want to go to Uni, so I didn’t even apply! I applied to various apprenticeships but the one that stuck out the most to me was the one in Severn Trent Services, it’s a relatively long interviewing process for Severn Trent apprenticeships as they are in such high demand due to the amazing career opportunities they offer. Truthfully, I didn’t even know it was with Aqualytix till after id gotten the apprenticeship but I’m really glad it was.
3. What’s the difference between having an apprenticeship vs getting a full-time role?
Having an apprenticeship is most defined as learning to get some form of qualification on the job, whilst in a full time job most of the time it would be expected that you already have that qualification or something similar, I’m my case it’s for business qualification that I might not have been able to get if it had not been for my apprenticeship. When doing an apprenticeship, you would be expected to complete coursework and an end point assessment to transition into a full-time job and complete the qualification.
4.What’s been your favorite part so far about your apprenticeship?
My favorite part of my apprenticeship is the people, I don’t think I would be able to complete it without having a positive work environment and people in my team as well as the wider business have helped create that for me. I genuinely look forward to work which may sound like I’m lying but I promise I’m not and I think that has had a big impact on my apprenticeship.
5. What impact do you believe doing an apprenticeship and having a mentor will have on your career development?
I think the best thing you can do for career development especially when you haven’t worked or had experience in that field is do an apprenticeship as it gives you so much experience in the world of work so when it comes the time to develop and take on new opportunities it doesn’t feel like starting from square one, and if you’re looking to develop within your company you already have built relationships and a level of trust within the business so new career prospects are more likely, also having a mentor can help you develop further as they are there to answer any general questions help with interview skills and guide you into a position where you are ready and comfortable to develop your career.
6. Have you faced any challenges in your apprenticeship?
I would say the most challenging thing can be time management, as you have your day-to-day jobs to complete along with your coursework. I’ve sometimes found it tricky to fit everything in as it’s important to prioritise coursework but also to complete work given in a timely manner. That’s where having a mentor is great, as you can ask questions and get help in areas you may be struggling. The support at Aqualytix and Severn Trent as a whole is the best. I’ve never felt that there’s been an ask that’s too big, or a time where I’ve been refused time or help, I may need.
7. And lastly, what’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone who is considering an apprenticeship or wanting to get a mentor?
If you’re considering an apprenticeship, it’s essential to research the field you’re interested in and understand the skills you’ll gain. Look for a program that aligns with your career goals and offers a supportive learning environment. Also, be prepared to be open-minded and adaptable.
If you’re thinking about getting a mentor, it’s crucial to find someone that aligns with your goals and values. Look for a mentor that can offer guidance, support, and valuable insight based on their experience. Building a strong relationship with your mentor can be a rewarding and enriching experience in your personal and professional growth journey.
